A new low Earth orbit satellite broadband service is planned for commercial launch in South Africa during 2027. The service will target homes and small businesses in farms, small towns and rural communities where fibre or fixed wireless networks are unavailable, costly to build or difficult to maintain. It will be delivered through a local internet provider that already supports more than 350,000 customers across over 550 towns and operates around 120 offices nationwide. LEO broadband uses satellites positioned much closer to Earth than traditional geostationary communication satellites. A geostationary satellite normally operates about 35,786 kilometres above Earth, while LEO broadband satellites operate at only a few hundred kilometres. The shorter radio path reduces signal delay and can make video calls, cloud software, remote access, online learning and business applications work more smoothly. Users connect through an electronic outdoor antenna linked to an indoor Wi-Fi router or local network.
The planned network has approval in the United States for 3,236 non-geostationary satellites operating mainly in Ku and Ka-band frequencies. More than 375 satellites had reached orbit by early July 2026, and over 100 launch missions had been secured for the wider deployment programme. South African commercial availability will depend on enough satellites being operational over the required latitudes, together with ground-station capacity, internet backhaul and local regulatory clearance.
The standard customer terminal previously presented for residential and small-business use is a compact phased-array antenna designed to support download speeds of up to 400 Mbps. A larger enterprise terminal has also been developed for download speeds up to 1 Gbps and upload speeds up to 400 Mbps. These are terminal capability figures and should not be treated as guaranteed user speeds. Actual performance will depend on satellite visibility, available network capacity, weather conditions, service loading, Wi-Fi quality and the selected package.
South Africa already has wide mobile broadband coverage, but fixed internet access at home remains uneven. Regulatory data shows that 82.1% of households had access to the internet from some location during 2024, while only 17.4% had internet access at home. Fixed access also differs sharply between provinces. Fibre continues to grow in cities and larger towns, but long cable routes, low customer density, power requirements and maintenance travel can make deployment expensive in remote areas.
LEO satellite broadband changes the final access method because a home or business does not need a fibre cable or nearby fixed-wireless tower. The customer terminal requires a clear view of the sky, stable mounting, electrical power and a suitable router. Data moves from the terminal to a passing satellite and then through the satellite and ground network before reaching the public internet. This can reduce installation time in locations where terrestrial construction would take months.
The service could support remote working, online education, point-of-sale systems, cloud applications, security cameras and voice services. Small businesses may also use it as a backup connection when fibre or fixed wireless services fail. Service quality will still depend on correct antenna positioning, enough capacity in each coverage area and reliable local technical support.
Before commercial introduction, the satellite network and local service provider must complete coverage testing, terminal certification, spectrum coordination and licensing work. South Africa has been updating its satellite regulatory process to cover user terminals, spectrum charges and the registration of international satellite systems.
LEO broadband can add another fixed internet option for South Africa. Its practical success will depend on monthly pricing, equipment cost, installation support, stable speed and service availability outside major cities.
